Book Box Recap

Hello! Hope this final (finally) month of 2022 is treating you…with some decency.

We want to take time to do two things: 1) Thank all of you who purchased our first subscription book box; 2) Share with you details of the box such as the titles we included and how many we sold.

The Thanks

To all who ordered both the single box or the full year. We will continue to search for books we find interesting and great from all over. We will keep white writers to a minimum. And we will look for ways to surprise you with cool secret things.

The Books

In addition to our newest book, the incredible and incredibly unique A.I.R. Head: Anatomy of An Artist In Residence by Alan Nakagawa, these were the three other titles:

cover of the novel Unwieldy Creatures by Addie Tsai. A dark blue background with different shades of blue making up the details in the painting -- a blue flame below a curled up body that seems to be on blue fire

Unwieldy Creatures
by Addie Tsai
Jaded Ibis Press

“Unwieldy Creatures, unrelenting in its inventiveness and its ambition, is easily the most innovative book I’ve read in years.. I’m hooked.” - MacArthur Genius Grant winner Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy: An American Memoir

A Horse at Night: On Writing
by Amina Cain
dorothy project

“A Horse at Night is a transmutation of fiction and nonfiction, a form of unfurling, soft and grainy at the edges. Moving through this text feels like resting your eyes on shifting shapes on a walk in the dusk.”—Sophie Brown, Astra

Muscle Memory
by Jenny Liou
Kaya Press

“This debut collection by Jenny Liou, a Renaissance scholar who is also a former cage-fighter, attests to her unique position at the crossings of the seemingly contradictory strands of an evolving personal identity and her diasporic heritage as the daughter of a Chinese immigrant.” — Garrett Hongo, author of Coral Road

We are honored that the writers and publishers of these beautiful books worked with us in including them in The Large Box #1.

The Sales

Early on, we decide 25 was the maximum number of boxes we would make this round. The reason being we’d never done it before and we didn’t want to try to burn ourselves out trying to sell more than we could nor more than we could afford to sell since we only had so much $$ to purchase all the necessary books and materials.

We ended up selling 21! Six people subscribed for the whole year at the small discounted price.

We are happy with the numbers. Hopefully, we will be able to sell out on the 19 boxes that will be available of The Large Box #2, which will go on sale 2/1/23.

We will create lists for each book box on Bookshop.org so you can give all these books and indie presses (and the indie bookstores that Bookshop.org helps) your love and moneys.
